Hummus: Put That Stuff in Your Pipe and Smoke It!

ImageI had to share with you the take of Bruce Cheson from Georgetown University (USA). He asked himself: How can we reduce the risk of cancer in this country? Hummus. Huh? He came to this conclusion after reading a piece in the April 30, 2013 Wall Street Journal. He learned that the sale of hummus in the United States were up 25% in the last 2 years, creating a $500,000,000 (USD) business. What’s this have to do with cancer, you may appropriately ask. Well, some major hummus companies are making deals with farmers in states such as Virginia to replace tobacco crops with chickpeas. As a result of hummus sales going up, tobacco sales are going down.

Health food taking over from the evil leaf. Who knew? So the next time you head to the grocery store, think about checking out the hummus (and pick up some olive oil to go with it for bonus points). I’m Dr. Michael Hunter. Oh, and just eat the hummus. Don’t smoke it!
