Regular coffee drinkers may be half as likely to develop liver cancer as those who never or rarely consume coffee. This is the conclusion of a meta-analysis (study of studies) recently published (Gastroenterology 2013;dpi:10.1186/1471-230X-13-34).
Researchers evaluated data from 7 cohort and 9 case control studies, including 11 studies from Asia and 5 from North America. The risk of liver cancer was half among the lovers of java. Reductions were apparent in Asia (relative risk 0.57) and Europe (RR 0.45). Adjustment for a history of liver disease reduced, but did not eliminate the association.
My take: Interesting, but limitations include the inability to determine the impact consuming varying amounts of coffee, the geographic limitation to Europe and Asia, and the chance of publication bias (maybe the researchers who found no reduction elected not to publish). So, the usual: Better-controlled studies are needed. Still, for me, it is more reason to enjoy my cup of joe.
